Fitness to drive

Do you have employees who are required to drive either FLT’s side loaders, ¬†or HGV’s . The legal requirement of the health and safety at work Act is that safe systems of work are in place. There are specific fitness standards that apply to driving HGV’s. Although there is no legal requirement for FLT’s, cranes, construction site vehicles and other vocational drivers to have a health assessment, there is a clear implication that medical fitness may be a prequisite for ensuring such a safe system of work . Employers have a responsibility to ensure that employees with a disability or long term health problems are fit to drive. Fitness requirements include good eyesight, adequate hearing, good musculoskeletal health and mobility as well as good mental health.

Vision testing is carried out as part of the assessment.
